High Definition Update: Interview with Paul Wheeler
HIGH definition update
High definition update Day - Interview with Paul Wheeler
In July 2005, I wrote an e-zine with the title "High Definition" When? "At the time, we have seen little demand for HDCAM equipment apart from a few customers over the seven months later, the United States, the situation has radically changed. We added two Sony HDW-F900 HDCAM camcorders (top of Sony's HDCAM line for TV and / or film) to our stock in January 2006 because increasing demand and see what the beginning of a trend. And we just take a reservation for a multi-camera shooting in March with six HDW-F900.
Interview with Paul Wheeler soon available on DVD
With this increased demand, we recently hired Paul Wheeler BSC, a famous film and director of digital photography who wrote the book, "High Definition and 24P Cinematography", to run workshops for us. While was here, I interviewed him. We will make DVDs available in an edition of the interview. If you want one, contact me at cal@procamtv.com.
BBC Drama and High Definition
One of my first questions to Paul was apparently sudden jump in demand for HDCAM. Paul's response: "Five years ago the BBC has been told in two years all they will file on HD. Three months ago they said everything that we record two years will be on HD then try to predict what happens is very difficult. The BBC, who wanted to go in this direction have not moved as quickly they wanted. But this is not a technical problem. This is a problem to persuade producers that use a new technology is safe. And I think this year (2005), we have just begun to see the confidence in the system and I am very optimistic that we will now see an effect cascade. When a couple of very expensive period dramas have been performed on the HD, they look exactly like period dramas very expensive. And for me it is a great starting point that I was hopeful would have happened a few years ago. "
Definition TV and Sky High
Sky TV also said they are on track with plans to launch HDTV in 2006. BSkyB COO Richard Freudenstein, said recently that the dramatic improvement in image quality would help BSkyB to achieve its objective ten million customers in 2010. "Innovation and technology leadership are at the heart of the brand Sky," he said. "By introducing HDTV, our ambition is to raise the bar again. "BSkyB expects sales of" HD Ready TV series "will accelerate as prices continue to drop the equipment and the availability of HDTV programming grows.
High Definition and Nonfiction
Paul says the increased use of HD in documentary and factual programming has been stronger than in the drama. "We had more programs in HD that we had the drama and I think that the disc it, there is the fact that you can sell around the world. You really can sell drama if you have it made in England for a nation of English but you can change comment because of a language very easily and I think there is more potential for international sales, or documentary work is therefore these benefits of transparency to move from what you've turned into what you want to sell it are even greater advantage. "
Sony HVR-Z1 (HDV) Digital Betacam vs.
The HD camcorder is the most popular Sony HVR-Z1. This is meant for shooting low-budget and the camera was replaced Sony DSR-PD170P. The main advantage is the Z1 has a smart widescreen shoots so true widescreen. The PD170P is a screen for setting the scale, but because has a 4:3 chip This setting produces images less than the Z1. Most of our customers in the folder rather than DVCAM HDV setting when using the Z1 and get excellent results.
In some articles I have seen the report of the Z1 Sony DVW-790WSP camcorder with the conclusion of the quality picture is similar. Says Paul: "If you look straight out of the Z-1 and paste it into a decent monitor and do the same thing on the B channel with a Digi-Beta and you notch between the two, you'll be so impressed. But there are other issues to know why you choose a camera. The first is the recording format and Digi-Beta format is much more stable and robust than the M PEG-2 compression used in HDV process. "This, says Paul, is particularly worrying in post-production, especially if you do a little "just post-production."
Other issues to consider are the purpose and actual robustness of the camera. The lens on a Digi-Beta is much more flexible and faster to meet the target on a Z1 and if you're shooting even under somewhat unfavorable 790 is made much more severe.
See Paul is to "think (the Z1) as a replacement for your PD170, but do not think it is a replacement for the very professional, very robust, the registration process very strong Digi-Beta. It is not. "

The DVD of a edition of the interview with Paul include a discussion of the following:
The increasing use of High Definition camcorders vs Z1 Digital Betacam Brief summary of the different cameras: 730, 750 and F900 progressive scan and interlace recording in 1080 vs 720 Setting the camera adequately for post-production
Summary
High definition is there. I've never seen a format take off very quickly. We have seen a marked increase in demand in January and the interests and demands are growing. I recommend you learn as much as you can about of high-definition cameras available, the range of parameters that you can take and what accessories are often necessary. The E-Zine July cover much of this, Paul Wheeler DVD covers and more accessories the next E-Zine cover usually necessary.
Hitherto happy shooting!
