DLP TVs - Not Your Mom's Projection Television
Everybody talks TV HDTV and LCD televisions, but says little about DLP televisions. These televisions Nifty high-def are not the foggy, oddly angled and difficult to see low contrast of games from your childhood, but rather high-tech digital versions of modern cinema projectors, rear-Set projector and projector screen without generally considered a DLP front projector.
Front projector is essentially a rear projection DLP set without the box, let's talk about that one first. These DLP TVs do not look at all like the TV, but rather, they resemble to digital projectors, squat little boxes that have a lens on the front. The television image is digitally assembled to inside the unit and DLP projected to where you want, usually a wall or screen. The great advantage of this kind of DLP is that you have an image reduced to the size you want. The drawback, of course, is the quality is limited not only by the specifications of DLP, but also by the quality of your projection surface.
Rearprojection take care of this problem, but at the expense the flexibility of front-projection DLP. These units much more like projection TVs of yesteryear, but with an image dramatically improved. Although a DLP does not value the contrast of a plasma TV, they are as good as most LCD TVs and units are much more severe.
A rear-projection DLP is surprisingly thin - not mounted on the wall like a plasma or LCD model, but that a few centimeters deep. Models that are wall mounted or near start coming on the market right now, so you can expect that option in the near future. They are also much less expensive than plasma TVs, and larger sizes are cheaper than LCD TVs comparable.
Although the picture with a good rear-projection is not quite the standards of a plasma, it is comparable to an LCD TV, and he has another major advantage: the backlight is replaceable. With a TV LCD, the light will be weak over time and repair, it is so expensive that it is cheaper to buy a new TV. A TV DLP light source will shut off one day, but the bulb is completely replaceable, in some models designed to be replaced by the buyer, and much less expensive than a new set. If your TV is designed to get heavy use, a television DLP is much cheaper long term than a similar LCD TV. And a plasma TV? Forget about it! Once the light DIMS, it can not be repaired and must be replaced.
The major manufacturers of DLP now are Samsung, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG and RCA. Most experts prefer Panasonics, but that uses DLP technology mirror that comes from Texas Instruments will do well. The main thing to watch for, besides image quality is a DLP TV that lets you change the bulb itself. Newer sets also use LED lighting instead of halogen lamps. This is an advantage for two reasons. First, LEDs last considerably longer than halogen (although the halogen still have a long life). Secondly, halogen produce much heat, and fan used to dissipate across a whining noise that irritates some viewers. LEDs emit very little heat and have different issue.
