Emley Moor Transmitter
History
The current tower is the third structure to have occupied the site. The original 135 meters (443 ft.) lattice tower was erected in 1956 to provide independent television in the Yorkshire region. It was replaced in 1964 by a larger 385.5 meters (1,265 ft) guyed mast (identical to the structure still standing in Belmont in Lincolnshire).

Emley Moor has been used as a transmission site since the early days of television transmission. The first transmitter Standing construction there was a ITV transmitter, which covers much of the North. He used a tower 135 meters network, which provided only limited coverage. The performance of the site was improved in 1966, in anticipation of the color PAL signals, when 385 meters of the mast tube was supported Guy erected, constructed from curved steel segments to form a 2.75 meters (9 ft) diameter pipe, 275 meters (902 feet) long. This was overcome by a section of 107 meters high made of wire and a cylinder cap, bringing the total height to 386 meters (1266 ft). When its construction, it was one of the structures highest position in the world. It has been designed and manufactured by BICC by EMI.
The cylindrical mast Steel is now regularly covered with ice during the winter months, ice and also formed large icicles on the shrouds, placing them under much higher pressure. The son of Guy passed over several small roads, and melting ice has reduced risk icicle. For this reason, red warning lights were placed on the tower for use in times of falling ice, with signs on roads near the border guy.
March 19 1969, a combination of strong winds and the weight of ice that had formed around the top of the mast and shrouds has the structure down. The duty engineer wrote the following in the log of the station, which shows that structural failure was completely unexpected:

1265 ft (386 m) mast: - Fell through Jagger Lane (corner of Common Lane) at 5:01:45 p.m.. Police, ITA HQ, RO, etc., all notified.

Collapse left sections of the mast bent littering the area around the transmitter site and through several small local roads. Although one of the guys under cut through a local church and debris were strewn all over the transmitter site, no one was injured in the collapse. The noise was heard for several miles. The collapse completely off the transmitter and the transmitter UHF BBC2 ITV VHF, leaving several million people without service. The accumulation of ice was generally acknowledged to have caused the collapse, but a commission of inquiry which he attributes to a form of oscillation that occurred at a low but constant wind speed. Changes were then poles similar to Belmont and Winter Hill, including the hanging of 150 tonnes of steel chains in each structure. No modification of mast collapsed.
After a series of temporary masts, erection the current concrete tower built in 1969 has begun with UHF (625 lines Color) transmissions from January 21, 1971 with the old VHF (405-Line System black and white) came into force April 21, 1971. Local residents do not want to see Emley Moor mast another, and therefore a departure from normal patterns was sought. The new structure consists of a curved pillar, 275 feet high, built of reinforced concrete, topped by a mast 55 meters steel truss that supports the antenna.

A section of the tower collapsed has been converted for use as a control tower of the race near Huddersfield Sailing Club.
Structure
The structure is a conical reinforced concrete tower. It is the largest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom at a height of 330.4 meters (1084 feet). Go to the tower room at the top of the party concrete tower of 275 m (900 ft) involves a journey of seven minutes by a lift. The structure of this antenna on top is another 56 m (184 ft). Its foundations penetrate 6.1 m (20 ft) in the soil and the entire structure, including foundations, weighs 11,200 tons. It was designed by Ove Arup and Partners. When it was built, It was the third tallest freestanding structure in Europe, after the Ostankino Tower 540 meters (1772 feet) and Berlin Fernsehturm (current height 368 meters (1207 ft)).
The top of the tower is 594 m (1949 ft) above sea level due to the elevated position of the site on the eastern edge of the Pennines.
In 2002, the British government said Emley Tower Grade II listed building "significant architectural or historic interest.

It is owned by Arqiva, formerly Independent Broadcasting Authority as NTL Broadcast Engineering privatized.
Broadcast details
Emissions Emley Moor Tower BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 Yorkshire, Channel 4, Five, six digital television multiplexes, three sets of digital radio and two radio stations Independent Local (Galaxy 105 and Real Radio) over an area of approximately 10,000 km. This is the main relay station some 57 transponders and any throughout Yorkshire and surrounding counties. In July 2007 it has been confirmed by Ofcom that Emley Moor transmitter would still be a group B after DSO (passage digital). DSO is scheduled to take place in September 2011.
This area has always been important for RF (radio frequency) transmission of foot structure both Holme Moss and Emley Moorside Edge Transmitter are visible. The latter two are within ten miles (16 km) radius and SW and WNW, respectively.
Repairs and changes
Over the years, the structure has been updated with various dishes and antennas. This reflects the changing nature of communications and technology. The most visible changes are outside of the tower. Both the top and bottom of the tower, other support structures were attached to accommodate dishes and antennas.
The BBC reported in July 2006 for a maximum of two weeks, the tower has been responsible for communicating analog signals and digital low-power than usual, or to close between 0900 and 1500 week in Paris at the end of July until 4 August. It was allow aircraft lights to be installed in the tower and repairs. The repair work was estimated to affect nearly five million households, but a spokesman for National Grid Wireless has announced that work had been planned around major events.

The tower is not open to the public. However, there is a viewing area just off the main road that passes in front of her.
In popular culture
Poet Simon Armitage has written a poem on Emley Moor to accompany a short program on the tour on BBC2 in the 1990s.
